Great Lakes Lighthouses
True American treasures.
True American treasures.
With the early rays of sun peeking above Michigan’s horizon, the distant landscape begins to appear.
That solitary light, which I have chased begins to take shape, slowly revealing itself to be high atop a stunning black and white tower. It is Big Sable Point Lighthouse. With only the guidance of my compass, and after paddling more than 50 miles across Lake Michigan, I glide onto the sandy beach below this welcoming beacon; the precise point which I had set out to reach 15 hours before. For a ship in danger, a lighthouse offers hope and security. For me, these treasured Great Lakes’ coastal beacons give inspiration for a trip about to begin, forewarning of the danger ahead with a reminder that much larger crafts than mine are now resting on the bottom, and they offer solace for a grand trip soon to end. |
